What is the best technique for indexing a new site in google?
I have been using social bookmarking with good success, but I was wondering what everyone else is doing.

I used a program called Internet Business Promotor. Not free, but very effective. The Bridlington Penguin is virtually top of the rankings in Yahoo and Google now, even on strange search terms like INFORMATION TO TOURISTS COMING TO BRIDLINGTON.
That was one of the more odd searches where we ranked on the first page.

Ensure your website or blog is search engine friendly. Meta tags, keywords, optimization. Don't submit it directly to google to crawl, that could take weeks/months. Find some free directory lists sites to submit your urls. Having links on high pr sites is a plus and to answer another question above, do a search for the specific niche your blog/site is about, those first 10 results that are already indexed (not sponsored results) are the websites you need to target. Link exchange, talk to the webmaster, or pay for a link to be on their site for a certain amount of time. As another person said, spread the word, network and talk with as many other people as possible, and not just to increase traffic, but to actually get into whatever it is they are doing. Create a site map, but ensure it is google friendly. Use google webmaster tools for that and make sure its the right format, then submit your sitemap to google. Keep updating your content and letting the search engines know your updating your content. Start writing related articles linking back to your site. That is excellent advise. Getting indexed in Google or other search engine is just the beginning though. You should have a high quality site that other people find useful enough to place a link from their site. In the long run, the quality of your inbound links is defines your page rank, more than anything else.

Getting links from high quality sites within your blogs/sites industry is paramount. For instance, I have two blogs one is http://www.selfpublishforprofit.blogspot.com (book publishing) the other is http://www.gojawar.blogspot.com (music business).
It makes more sense for me to acquire inbound links for the book publishing site from blogs/sites that deal with book publishing that appear on the first, second, third pages of Google for book publishing, self-publishing, etc vs. attempting to get those same sites to give me a link for my music business blog.
The other thing you want to do is to update your blog with great content on a frequent basis. By frequent I mean at least once a week and more as your schedule permits.
This type of organic traffic building takes time, but does wonders over the long haul. Eventually, the increase traffic flow turns into cash if your blog or site is monetized to do so.

Content, content and more content! and at least 5 pages of 500-800 words per page, your content should be original otherwise you risk being penalised or even de-indexed by google.
Quality backlinks are the next key element, try ensure your backlinks are relevent and from high quality sites.
Social networking is a great way to announce your site, sign-up and and post with a backlink to your site.
